Our paving contractors build new paved areas and repair paving that has sunk, shifted or stopped draining. Driveways and parking areas need a deeper compacted base and pavers rated to carry vehicle weight. We set the falls so water moves away from garages and the other spots that cause trouble.

We build patios and entertaining areas that join cleanly to the house, lawn, garden or pool. We set the levels around doorways and make sure water falls away from the building.

Approvals and checks
Before you pave in Sydney
When paths, patios and driveways need approval in NSW, and the limits that apply. Each point links to the official source.
Paths and patios: usually no approval
A path, patio or terrace is exempt development when its runoff drains to the property’s stormwater. On a residential lot the cut or fill must stay within 600 mm, and all paving together, driveways included, within 15% of the lot or 150 m², whichever is smaller.
Keep enough of the front yard as garden
On a residential lot, at least 25% of the area in front of the house has to stay as garden when the lot is up to 18 m wide, and 50% when it is wider. Paving the whole front yard takes the job outside the exempt rules.
Driveways follow stricter rules
A driveway or car space is never exempt on a heritage item, in a heritage conservation area, a foreshore area or on environmentally sensitive land. A new kerb, crossover or driveway crossing also needs written consent from the roads authority, usually your council.
Paving work over $5,000 needs a licence
Driveways, paths and other paving are structural landscaping, so a paving job over $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence. Our work is licensed under NSW contractor licence 291815C (Structural Landscaping).

How a paving job runs
The lasting work starts under the pavers, and that is where the quote starts.
Step 1
We have a look at the area
We check the old surface, the soil, base, levels, drainage and access, then talk through the pavers and how the area gets used.
Step 2
We choose the pavers and agree the price
The written quote sets out the excavation, base, drainage, pavers, edges and price, so you can see what is included before the job is booked.
Step 3
We prepare the base and lay the pavers
We excavate to depth, compact the sub-base in layers, install drainage and edge restraint, then lay and cut the pavers to the agreed pattern. Joint sand is swept and compacted to lock the surface.
Step 4
We check the falls and clean up
We check the levels and where the water runs, clean the finished paving, take away the waste and equipment, and explain how to look after the joints and surface.

Paving questions
What people ask before the quote, answered from paving we have relaid and replaced.
Nearly always the base underneath: bedding that has washed out, a sub-base that was never compacted properly, or water with nowhere to go. In Balgowlah the pavers had sunk and were pooling water, so we lifted them, built a new compacted sand and gravel base and relaid them.
Often, if they are sound and you like the layout. The Balgowlah pavers went back down in their original pattern. When pavers are damaged or you want a new look, we replace them, as on the Naremburn side path and the North Sydney courtyard and steps.
We set the falls so water runs away from the house and towards a drain, and fix any drainage problem before the pavers go down. At Artarmon the drainage along a narrow poolside access was corrected first, then the new paving was laid.
