Service Overview

What Our Retaining Wall Service Covers

Common retaining wall scopes for sloping blocks, failed walls, and level changes across Sydney.

We build and replace retaining walls for Sydney properties that need to hold ground, manage water, or turn a sloping block into usable space. Most of our retaining work is on residential blocks across the North Shore, Hills District, and Northern Beaches where clay soils move with moisture and older timber sleeper walls have started to lean or crack. Chad leads the structural side and scopes every wall around the actual site conditions: soil type, slope angle, drainage path, surcharge loads, and what sits above and below the wall. For walls over 600 mm we handle the council consent process, and for walls over 900 mm we coordinate engineer certification before construction starts. Materials range from concrete block and steel-post systems to timber sleepers and sandstone, chosen for the height, load, and finish the site needs rather than a default spec.

Inclusions

What Retaining Wall Work Includes

The main wall types, drainage standards, and related services we commonly deliver alongside retaining work.

Wall Design and Site Assessment

We survey the slope, check soil type, measure level changes, note drainage paths, and assess what sits above and below the proposed wall. The design accounts for surcharge loads, water pressure behind the wall, and how the finished levels connect to the rest of the property.

Concrete Block and Besser Retaining Walls

Reinforced concrete block walls for sites that need height, load capacity, or a clean rendered finish. We build with steel reinforcement, core-filled cells, and proper footing depth for Sydney clay conditions.

Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls

Hardwood or treated pine sleeper walls suited to lower heights and garden terracing. We set steel posts at the correct spacing and depth so the wall holds ground without leaning within a few seasons, which is the most common failure we see on older sleeper walls across Sydney.

Drainage, Backfill and Water Management

Every retaining wall we build includes ag-pipe behind the base, gravel backfill, and weep holes or discharge points. Poor drainage is the main reason retaining walls fail in Sydney. Water builds hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and pushes it forward. We address that before backfilling.

Failed Wall Replacement and Rebuilds

Remove leaning, cracked, or bowing walls and rebuild with proper footings, drainage, and materials suited to the actual load. Most replacements we do are old timber sleeper walls that were built without drainage or with undersized posts.

Slope Reshaping and Terraced Levels

Create flat, usable areas on sloping blocks by building stepped retaining walls that terrace the site. We plan the wall heights to balance cut and fill, minimise soil removal, and give the finished layout practical level changes rather than unusable slopes.

Planting, Paving and Finish Integration

Complete the areas above, below, and beside the wall so the finished site looks resolved. Garden beds, turf, paving, and paths are tied into the retaining structure rather than left as a separate follow-up job.

Our Process

How a Retaining Wall Project Works

Four stages from site assessment to finished, drained, backfilled wall.

  1. 01

    Step 01

    Site Assessment and Levels

We survey the slope, measure level changes, check soil type, note drainage paths, and assess what sits above and below the proposed wall. If the wall is over 600 mm we confirm whether council consent or engineer involvement is needed before quoting.

  2. 02

    Step 02

    Design, Engineering and Quote

You receive a written scope covering wall type, material, footing specification, drainage method, and backfill detail. For walls that need engineering we coordinate certification and include it in the timeline. The quote is itemised and fixed.

  3. 03

    Step 03

    Excavation, Construction and Drainage

We excavate the footing trench, pour or compact the base, build the wall in courses or panels, install ag-pipe drainage and gravel backfill behind the wall, and set weep holes or discharge points. The site is kept tidy and safe throughout.

  4. 04

    Step 04

    Backfill, Finish and Handover

We complete the backfill, compact in layers, and finish the surrounding area as agreed. We walk the finished wall with you, confirm drainage is flowing, and hand over any engineer certificates or consent documentation.

FAQs

Retaining Walls FAQs

Answers to common pre-quote questions

A retaining wall holds soil in place where there is a change in ground level. On sloping Sydney blocks it prevents soil from sliding downhill, protects structures and fences from ground movement, manages surface water runoff, and creates flat, usable areas out of otherwise wasted slopes. It also stops soil pressure from damaging boundary fences, paths, and neighbouring properties.

The most common materials we use are concrete block (Besser block), hardwood and treated pine timber sleepers, sandstone, and steel-post systems. Concrete block suits taller walls and heavier loads. Timber sleepers work well for garden terracing and lower walls under about 1 metre. Sandstone suits properties where a natural stone finish matters. We recommend materials based on wall height, soil load, drainage conditions, and the finish you want rather than defaulting to one product.

Most residential retaining walls take between three and ten working days depending on wall length, height, material, and how much excavation and drainage work is needed. A single-tier timber sleeper wall along a garden boundary might take three to four days. A taller concrete block wall with engineered footings, steel reinforcement, drainage, and backfill typically takes one to two weeks. We provide a timeline with the quote and update you if weather or site conditions affect the schedule.

In NSW, retaining walls over 600 mm in height generally require development consent from your local council. Walls over 900 mm typically also need certification from a structural engineer. We handle the consent paperwork and engineer coordination as part of the project where required. For walls under 600 mm, council approval is usually not needed, but we still build to the same drainage and structural standards.

Cost depends on wall length, height, material, site access, soil conditions, and whether engineering or council consent is required. Timber sleeper walls are generally the most affordable option for lower heights. Concrete block and sandstone walls cost more but handle greater loads and last longer. We provide a written, itemised quote after inspecting the site so the price reflects the actual scope rather than a per-metre estimate that ignores drainage, footings, and access.

Start with the site conditions: how much height the wall needs to hold, the soil type, where water drains, what sits above and below the wall, and how the finished space will be used. We assess all of this during the free site visit and recommend a wall type and material that suits the load, the budget, and the look of the property. For taller walls or walls near structures we involve an engineer early so the design is confirmed before construction starts.
